An entrepreneurial leader is about "organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal using proactive entrepreneurial behavior by optimising risk, innovating to take advantage of opportunities, taking personal responsibility and managing change within a dynamic environment for the benefit of the organisation."
Such leadership aims to cultivate entrepreneurial individuals and teams that fully leverage their creative potential in creating value for an organisation. Entrepreneurial leadership does this by employing leadership practices that "develop the ability in employees to self-generate, self-reflect, and self-correct in their workplace".
A number of organisations have sought to develop the concept of entrepreneurial leadership within the business world. The principles of entrepreneurial leadership can be applied to a number of sectors and to a wide variety of organisations. The success of this approach has confirmed the compatibility of entrepreneurial leadership to the majority of organisations seeking to improve client/customer service and overall performance.
Entrepreneurial leadership is effectively using the skills associated with successful individual entrepreneurs and applying those within the environment of a larger organisation. This especially means within an organisation where those skills have been lost and replaced with a "corporate" mindset that focuses on process, systems and risk minimisation rather than on entrepreneurial behaviour.
Entrepreneurial leaders succeed by taking an opportunity-minded approach to their interactions with colleagues. As the pace of change accelerates and requires leaders to do more with less, smart leaders have realized that results don't simply follow by telling others what to do. Instead, it takes an entrepreneurial leader who understands how to translate opportunity, lead from their strengths, and enroll others in the organization's work. This course provides a toolbox of key concepts and practices to help you adopt an entrepreneurial mindset as you lead.
Whether you read Harvard Business Review articles on leadership skills (e.g. The Skills Leaders Need at Every Level or The Most Important Leadership Competencies) or other reports (e.g. a leadership management special report), they all tend to find that the key leadership skills are: Inspiring and motivating others, problem solving, delivering results, good communication, driving innovation and strategy, providing direction and goals, developing others, internal and external relationship building.
A leader needs to have all of these skills. So, what do you do to improve each one of them in record time?
There are 6 competencies frequently believed to contribute to the development of exceptional leaders:
1. Communicate a vision and path,
2. Assess the competitive environment with an external orientation,
3. Foster breakthrough thinking,
4. Develop outstanding financial talent,
5. Build team commitment, and
6. Propel to action.
There is one specific skill you never read about in leadership literature. It's a multiplier skill, i.e. it is at the root of all other leadership skills. If you improve this ONE you automatically improve the others at the same time. It's the ONE ring to bind them all to use Lord Of The Rings terminology.
