Building Coaching Cultures

Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships

Building Coaching Cultures

Building a coaching culture in the workplace better positions companies to grow and nurture talent. But what exactly is a "coaching culture," and how can leaders make this part of their everyday environment?

Organizations face considerable change and uncertainty and will continue to do so. In this context, it is crucial to motivate and manage teams for success. Traditionally teams have turned to team building and team facilitation to support them in the challenges they face. Here the focus is on the individuals within the team and with tasks internal to the team, such as identifying how relationships can be improved so that the team can work better.

While companies are investing time and money in workplace coaching, hoping it will seep into their company culture and drive productivity and engagement, a lot of companies aren't seeing the results they want. The disconnect? Culture.

A coaching culture simply means supporting your employees so that they learn new skills and become greater assets to the company. A management culture that emphasizes training, regular feedback, and opportunities for growth creates a more engaged and energized workforce.

To be truly high performing, team members need to work together successfully to coordinate highly interdependent work and focus on the small number of decisions most consequential to the business. Often teams end up being a collection of individuals with individual accountability who meet with a leader to discuss and agree upon the extent to which their contributions are delivering on the organization's goals. Such teams are not really teams at all and are certainly not high-performing ones.

The adage is simple but true: Where you fail to plan, you plan to fail. You can't create a coaching culture without developing an action plan and providing support to make the transition easier on employees. Establish a personalized follow-up plan that will work with your organization's business cadence and structure. We've seen companies develop a master coaching class with follow-up small group sessions. Other companies use reporting systems and even online coaching platforms or apps. The point is, create a system that helps everyone apply what he or she learns, and check in on it regularly.
